Please join us for happy hour at McCray's Tavern on the Square in Lawrenceville for our November monthly meetup. McCray's has live music on Friday nights starting at 10pm, for those who can stay later in the evening. I'm not sure where we'll end up (a table or the bar), but I'll wear a Meetup button so you can find me more easily. Please try to RSVP either Yes or No, rather than Maybe. If you RSVP Yes, please be sure that you show up! We typically have to give venues a count of expected attendees, and they don't like it when we have a bunch of no-shows. If your plans change closer to the date, please remember to update your RSVP. Thanks for your cooperation. :-)

Please join Forgotten Soldiers Outreach (FSO) on Saturday, Oct 24th and show your support for our Servicemen and Servicewomen deployed overseas. During this event we will be putting together care packages for soldiers serving overseas. Care packages include everything from basic toiletries to books, snacks and socks. We also include letters and notes from people like you, thanking them for their service. If you've never done an event like this before, it is very humbling to think of all the little things that we take for granted that soldiers are currently lacking. You will be touching the life of Seamen, Airmen, Soldiers and Marines this day as we send a “little bit of home” to these men and women so far from home this Thanksgiving. The packing event runs from 10am - 2pm (or until all the packages are completed). If we have enough volunteers, we'll probably be done a little earlier than 2pm. Orientation is from 8:30 - 10am (for new volunteers). Special Guest - Micenna from Micenna’s Mission, an organization helping veterans. This packing event will be big and we will need all the help that we can get. We will have stations set up and when you come you will be assigned a station to work at.
If you do not have an FSO t-shirt you can order one through the web site at www.forgottensoldier s.org and it will be shipped to you, or you can wear something red, white and blue if you would like. What better way to show your “Thanks” to our Servicemen and Servicewomen!! For more information about FSO please visit our website at www.forgottensoldier s.org Contact: Francine Thompson 770-899-2495 Please note - I will not be allowing Maybe RSVPs for this event, since they need to know how many volunteers to expect. If you're a Maybe, please wait to RSVP until you know for sure. I don't want to have a lot of last-minute cancellations or no-shows. Thanks!

For 37 years, the picturesque grounds of the Stone Mountain Park meadow, a short drive northeast of Atlanta, Georgia, have resounded with the sounds of bagpipes, fiddles and harps during the third weekend in October. This year once again, thousands of Scots (even those that wish to be 'Scot for the Day') from around the world will don their family tartans and gather to greet old friends and make new ones too. Come, join us under the beautiful autumn skies of north Georgia for a truly fabulous weekend! The games take place from Friday through Sunday, but I would recommend going on Saturday for a more complete experience. There are usually about 30-35 pipe bands playing and performing on Saturday, as well as the athletic competitions. Be sure to make it for the opening ceremonies at noon on Saturday to see the massed bands play. Sunday features a parade of tartans, when representatives of the various clans parade onto the field. They added kids' games last year and they were a big hit. Sign them up and they go around to different stations to do a mini Caber Toss, Hammer Throw, etc. Come along for a fine time.... Visit www.smhg.org for more info, directions, and ticket prices. Several meetup members will be hosting tents or participating in the games in some way, including: Marty and Bren will be hosts at the Sinclair tent. They normally have the clan tent and put lots of chairs behind the tent for folks to sit, talk, etc. Bren will also bring a cooler if anyone wants to bring anything to keep cool. Marty and Bren will be there all weekend. Lori and Colleen have also invited us to check out the Scottish Country Dance pavilion..... they do demonstrations and invite the onlookers to join in for some simple dances. It's lots of fun, and if you let them know you're coming they'll drag you on the platform for a dance! hehe Tom Burns will be at the Atlanta Robert Burns Club tent, so feel free to stop by and say "hi". Scott King will be piping with the Atlanta Pipe Band. Band competitions take place on Saturday, while APB typically does performances throughout the day on Sunday. Look for the orange kilts.

Please join us for happy hour at The Harp Irish pub in Roswell. This is the first of hopefully many monthly happy hours around town. The Harp typically has some kind of live music on Friday nights, so hopefully we'll get to hear some good music while sitting back sipping a pint. Update: I will be changing Maybe RSVPs to No on July 24th so please update your RSVP if you are a maybe. FSO needs to know as soon as possible if you are definitely able to volunteer, so they can set the schedules. I will forward the contact info for the Yes RSVPs to Shannon Grote, the volunteer coordinator, so she can communicate with you directly. Thank you! This event is for the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach (FSO) organization. They're a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging our soldiers overseas by providing care packages and letters of support. In conjunction with Six Flags' military appreciation weekends, FSO will have a table set up to provide information about the organization and how people can help. FSO is looking for volunteers to staff 4-hour shifts during Saturday and Sunday, over 2 weekends (the 19th - 20th and the 26th - 27th). Volunteers will be able to stay and play at the park after their shift only. Note: if you volunteer, it's for one 4-hour period on one day, not for every day. This is a HUGE event for Forgotten Soldiers Outreach. These are the Military Appreciation Days at Six Flags. Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force. We need lots of volunteers and we need to know soon. The only people that will be allowed to enter the park at "NO CHARGE" will be the ones that truly want to volunteer for the 4hr shifts. The shifts run from 10am - 6pm at two separate booths. One will be at the entrance with a drop box and vouchers for Six Flags dollars to be spent in the park with their 5 item donation. The other booth will be inside the park with letter writing and general information about what we do. The booths must be manned from open to close with NO exceptions!! This is BIG for FSO and we must adhere to all the restrictions with no exceptions. As you know we will be able to make contact with about 250,000 people from all over the country. All volunteers will need to represent FSO with the same love and excitement you had the day you decided to make Forgotten Soldiers Outreach your charity of choice. Booth @ Gate 10am - 2pm =2 Volunteers 2pm - 6pm = 2 Volunteers Booth Inside Park 10am - 2pm = 4 Volunteers 2pm - 6pm = 4 Volunteers All Volunteers will need to park in the employee parking lot and will need to be on time because security will escort everyone in at the same time. Please if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Information about FSO can be found at www.forgottensoldier s.org

Big Saturday night? Fearful of tomorrow...? Need at scrumptious start to Sunday? The Georgia Scottish and Celtic Social Group has a solution: The new "Hair of the Dog" Meetup series! Meet up at Rí Rá Atlanta! What better way to start your Sunday? They don't start serving beer until 12:30 - so, meet up at noon! Early birds will catch some football... MIDTOWN: Rí Rá Atlanta 12th & Crescent Ave., NE* (1 block west of Peachtree St.) Atlanta, GA 30309 How will you find us? Look for the Meetup sign on the table... If you Google directions, or use a GPS, you'll probably be directed to the mailing address for Rí Rá: 1080 Peachtree. Pub is actually just around the block. Come around the block (down 12th) and you'll see the pub. MARTA is very close by - use the Midtown station. Walk up (east) 10th, left on Peachtree, left on 12th Added bonus: For Monet fans, Sunday 8/23 is the final day for the Monet exhibit at the High. The High is just a few blocks away - an easy walk.

If you're in the area, please stop by and join me for happy hour at Keegan's Irish pub in Kennesaw. This will be my first official meetup as the new organizer, so I'd love to meet as many of you as can make it. This is short notice I know, but I hope to see you out there. If the weather's nice we'll try for the patio. I am setting the RSVP deadline for Thursday so we can give them an idea of how many people will be coming and hopefully they'll be able to section off an area for us. They have said that Friday night is the busiest time for them. If you RSVP Yes, please be sure that you show up! We have to give restaurants a count of expected attendees, and they don't like it when we have a bunch of no-shows. We will have a waiting list if this event fills up, so if your plans change and you can't make it please change your RSVP to a No so the next person on the waiting list can come instead. Thank you!

Since its conception in 1996, Enter the Haggis (ETH) has built an international touring and recording career based on its unique approach to Celtic-based music and high-energy performances. After the success of 2002’s ‘Enter the Haggis -Live!’, the group teamed up with JUNO nominated producer Joao Carvalho (Slainte Mhath, Pilate, Hawksley Workman) to record its fourth album, ‘Casualties of Retail’ (2004). The result is a strong album and a sound that ETH can call their own. 'Casualties of Retail' features the catchy bluegrass-fusion singles "Another Round" and "Gasoline" as well as driving Celtic-rock instrumentals that showcase the group’s arranging and performance talent. The music is primarily a fusion of Celtic, bluegrass and rock, however, elements of Latin, blues and funk can be heard throughout. The instrumental, "Congress" , combines a traditional Irish reel played on electric guitar with Latin percussion as well as a section in which drum sticks are played on acoustic guitar. "Whereas on our earlier records we didn’t spend a long time in the studio, we recorded ‘Casualties of Retail’ over two months" says the group’s bassist Mark Abraham, who originally got a taste of Celtic music while growing up in Cape Breton. "Taking our time gave us the opportunity to experiment, getting everything exactly the way we wanted it. We also worked with some amazing guest musicians."
